The short answer: it's more passable than its reputation suggests — but only if you prepare the right way. Here's the difficulty, the pass rate, and how to make it easy.
Roughly 75–80% of people pass. That means most people who prepare do fine — but a real minority fail, and each retake costs another £50. The difference between the two groups is almost always how they revised, not how clever they are.
The test can ask for specific detail: dates of battles, which festival belongs to which faith, how the court system differs between Scotland and England, and the workings of Parliament. Questions are drawn from the whole handbook, so you can't rely on knowing just the parts you find interesting.
Nearly always for the same reason: they read the handbook cover to cover, learn the early history well, and run out of steam by Government & Law — which carries a lot of questions. And they revise by re-reading rather than testing themselves under the clock, which gives false confidence.
